CHALLENGE
This backyard is located in growing zone H1. It is essentially a kind of construction landfill site, with a lawn and a few specimen trees. There is very limited privacy, which is a major concern.
The owners would like to enjoy summer evenings outdoors, as well as grow some vegetables and berries. The children no longer need a lawn, as they participate in sports elsewhere in the local community. The area can therefore be reimagined with the owners’ needs as the focus.
This plan presents two fairly comprehensive directions. At the same time, it can be broken down into smaller areas and implemented step by step.
Furthermore, the plan includes general plant recommendations to provide a direction for exploration. The first step should always be to visit local nurseries to see what they have available, as those plants will already be adapted to the local climate.

This illustration shows the hardscaping needed, along with the two main focal points; the large round planter with the dwarf tree, and the pergola.

The main point of this illustration is to show how the alternate location of the pergola can increase the privacy further.

The plan utilizes espaliered fruit trees to create much needed privacy hedges on both the east and the west wall.

The Form Composition Study is done to proof how we move through the new spaces.

The landscape design is a sketch ironing out the general idea. It tackles the challenges but also aims to fulfill other needs and wishes of the property owners.

The planting key lists the suitable plants and their location.

The plan has several square planters that will be populated by various categories of plants.

To point the owners in the right direction, we recommend raspberry varieties appropriate for zone H1.

To point the owners in the right direction, we recommend dwarf apple varieties appropriate for zone H1.

The owners need to learn how to espalier, so we provide resources and guidance.
